Territories Complexity Sao Paulo/Brussels
Rachel Rosalen (it/brasil) and Rafael Marchetti (it/argentina)
Tue 24 Mar
19:00 - 21:00

The project TERRITORIES COMPLEXITY was set up in 2007 by artists Rachel Rosalen and Rafael Marchetti from relations between geo-location and construction of meanings through the electronic media: production of interfaces, programming, site-specific installation creating a hybrid interactive space. These topologies and various sources of information (data-audio-video) generate a variety of mixed imaginaries. Perhaps the contemporary framework is not only a late modernism (and all the discussions that would arise - the deconstructivism, the post-modernism and liquid architectures), but a coexistence of this movements with the avant-pop, the otaku, the poku (pop otaku) and so on, also the artificial and virtual interactive environments created for experiments of all sorts, the hyper-communication and all the technological systems that build this super-structure. This confluence has generated questions as: what are these cross-urban areas on which we are working? How to look at these TERRITORIES COMPLEXITY as a pervasive feature of contemporary?

23░34's 46░39' w - Sao Paulo
Territories 23░34's 46░39' w took place at the white cubic room as well as on the glass fašade of the Art Gallery of SESC Paulista. The region was mapped out with a GPS device and a video camera, not casting aside the interferences of these capture systems and from the environment. The approaching processes to these new cartographies are achieved through the new electronic devices, using as key components the mapping, the collect and analysis of this information. It is from the analysis that the measuring and indexation mechanisms generate a data bank to build complex systems of visualization, according to strategies for specific readings needs. In this sense, the habitant or user of large cities are confronted at the begin of the third millennium with the concept of 'local' in line with the multiple dynamics of the flux made up from contemporaneous articulations between: global and local, macro and micro. Furthermore, dynamics stimulated by the invasion of stock markets, speculations and the implementation of large scale systems of telecommunication and transport, all under the paradigm of new technologies. Based on the collected data, the items were transformed in audiovisual elements controlled by infrared sensors, related to the flux of people in the interior of the gallery. These images were projected on the external glass fašade of the gallery giving back to the urban space aesthetic constructions of its own complexity. At the same time, these images were a deconstruction of the concept of a city 'on the post card'.

Le Livre @ Brussels 50░51'n 04░21'e - - in 20 days
As a territory Brussels has a very singular situation. From its foundation in 580, passing through the Charlemagne grandson, (1000 BC), Charles V of Habsburg (Spanish Imperious), Flanders, until to become the headquarters of the EEC, the European Economic Community, which has now become the EU -European Union (2003). Today the city to hosts over 120 international governmental organizations, 1,400 non-governmental organizations, 159 embassies and 2,500 diplomats. Brussels' role as a central location for European institutions and decisions has increased over the years. For many people in Europe, moreover, the term 'Brussels' has replaced the concept of the 'European institutions' in everyday language. Given that almost one-third of its citizens are foreigners or of foreign extraction, the Brussels Region is perpetuating its long tradition of cosmopolitanism based on its complexes social-urban situations.
