BIO

Fabián Barba werd geboren in Quito, Ecuador in 1982. Hij studeerde literatuur en communicatie zowel als dans en theater, en werkte vervolgens als professioneel performer in zijn thuisland. Van 2004 tot 2008 genoot hij een verdere dansopleiding aan P.A.R.T.S. Sinds het afronden van zijn opleiding vormt hij met vier studiegenoten het collectief Busy Rocks. Met Busy Rocks creëerde Fabián Dominos and Butterflies (2009) en Studium (2010). In 2009 creëerde hij zijn eerste solo. A Mary Wigman Dance Evening toert nog steeds wereldwijd en werd in 2010 bekroond met de Prix Jardin d’Europe. Ook in zijn nieuwe solo, A personal yet collective history (2011) verdiept Fabián zich verder in de dansgeschiedenis. In navolging van zijn onderzoek geeft hij regelmatig lezingen in binnen- en buitenland. Naast zijn solowerk en de projecten met Busy Rocks, werkt Fabián als danser samen met Thomas Hauert/ZOO aan de creatie You’ve changed (2010) en met de Amerikaanse choreografe DD Dorvillier aan het project Danza Permanente (2012).

FRAME OF RESEARCH

The proposal is to think about memory and dance training and their relation to a double movement of inscription: an inscription in/on our bodies of certain knowledges and the inscription of ourselves as dancers within a dance community.

The invitation to participate in the Thematics program ‘Author/authority’ is an opportunity to approach these questions I’ve been busy with through another angle: if I presuppose I’m formed by a community and that I’m making community, that is, if I consider that my existence as a dancer/author is possible only thanks to my engagement within a dance community, how do the notion of author could be understood as collective agency and not as the execution of an individual will?
